There is no single duration that is suitable for everyone, so begin slowly and adjust the session according to your comfort and the advice of your healthcare professional.Keep your movements gentle and controlled. Stop using the birthing ball if you feel tired, dizzy, unsteady or uncomfortable.

A maternity exercise ball can provide an alternative place to sit and a way to incorporate gentle movement into your routine. Depending on the guidance you receive, it may be used for comfortable sitting, gentle stretching, pelvic movement and different positions during pregnancy or labour.Whether it is suitable for you will depend on your individual pregnancy and circumstances. Speak to your midwife, GP or another healthcare professional if you are unsure.

The following are commonly used general size guidelines:
Under 5 ft 4 in (162 cm): 55 cm ball
5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 10 in (162–178 cm): 65 cm ball
Over 5 ft 10 in (178 cm): 75 cm ball

When seated, keep both feet flat on the floor. Your knees should be level with or slightly lower than your hips.

Gentle movement on a birthing ball may help some people find more comfortable positions during late pregnancy or labour. However, bouncing on the ball does not directly open the cervix or guarantee that labour will progress.

Stop immediately if you feel dizzy, unsteady or uncomfortable

Check the product specifications carefully and make sure you can sit with both feet flat on the floor and your knees level with or slightly lower than your hips.

Simply sitting on a birthing ball has not been shown to induce labour. Some mums use a pregnancy ball near their due date to stay gently active or explore more comfortable upright positions, but it cannot guarantee that labour will start.
